About the event
DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND, THIS WALK WILL BE OFFERED TO RUN IN PARALLEL TO THE INITIAL PURGATOIRE RIVER WALK!
Thanks to grants and donations from Great Outdoors Colorado, the Gates Family Foundation, and many individual supporters, the Purgatoire River Preserve is now a wildlife refuge and outdoor recreation hub. The property contains mature cottonwood riparian forests, high-quality wetlands, and access to more than a mile of the regionally significant Purgatoire River. SPLT is conducting a community process in Las Animas to determine how this property can best benefit local residents with respect to outdoor recreation. Plans include building a trail that provides river access, starting a bird-banding station in collaboration with Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, and conducting ecological restoration to return the property from former agricultural fields to native shortgrass prairie.
Habitat: Prairie and riparian
Possible birds:
Wild Turkey
Red-headed Woodpecker
